A Gentle Body Scan to Build Somatic Awareness

WHAT TO EXPECT

A body scan is a mindfulness practice that involves intentionally and systematically bringing awareness to each part of the body. It is a technique often used in mindfulness-based interventions, such as meditation or yoga. The purpose of a body scan is to cultivate present-moment awareness, as well as to develop a deeper connection with the body. By intentionally scanning through each part, individuals can notice sensations, tensions, or areas of discomfort. The practice above will help you develop a sense of embodied awareness, allowing you to observe physical sensations without judgment or reaction. In the guided practice above, Dr. Kelly Vincent will walk you through:

  • How to build awareness and intentional focus on what is going on in the body

  • How to slowly, gently listen to and feel sensations in the body

  • How to notice sensations in a nonjudgmental manner

  • How to practice mindfulness to help soothe and calm the mind/body

Props: For this practice, you’ll need a comfortable, safe space to practice. You can be sitting in a chair, on a couch, or even laying on the ground.
